British lose in France
With Andy Murray being absent from the French Open due to Injury along with Robson and Baltacha's loses in the first round , Heather Watson was Britain's last hope at representation in France.
Watson first match in Roland Garros was her first since being diagnosed with Glandular fever in April. Having taken six weeks out to recover from her illness, the British number two arrived in Paris far from her best form. However, despite this the Briton proved to much more of a fighter than many had anticipated. Watson showcased a series of strong forehands and serves which allowed her to win the second set 2-6. Although the Briton surprised many with her strength after suffering a long illness she was not strong enough to beat Switzerland's world number 56, Stefanie Voegele, and the match ended 6-4 2-6 6-4.
Watson voiced her disappointment in a post match interview as she stated that she was "gutted" and that it hurt a lot to lose. Although very disappointed, Watson was pleased to get her first match, since her illness, over with and that she was very pleased with many aspects of her game. The Brit's game showed a lot of promise and once she gains more momentum as she moves forward towards her next event, Watson could challenge some of the best tennis players in the world.
