French Open - Nadal, Robson & Williams
It was nervous times for Rafael Nadal yesterday as he made his way through to the second round of the French open in Roland Garros. The number four seed faced some seriously tough play from the 59th seeded German - Daniel Brands. With Brands serve keeping Nadal on the back foot for most of the first two sets, the Spaniard's seven month break from tennis as a result of a knee injury was showing. However, after regaining form at a crucial point in the second set tie break, Nadal went on to win the game 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3. The seven time champion has some work to do before his next match. Although, one must highlight the impressive performance of 6"5 Brands. He forced Nadal to run around the court like the past Wimbledon champion usually does to others. Of course it's nice to see Nadal getting back in to form after his shock defeat in Wimbledon almost a year ago but it is also encouraging to see lower seeded players showing the Tennis world that they can play some great tennis to.
Monday was also a disappointing day for British tennis as British number one seed, Laura Robson, crashed out of the competition to the racket of Caroline Wozniacki. Many people had predicted an upset with Robson defeating the Dane, however, by creating 39 forced errors and numerous double faults throughout the two set game, it was never going to be Robson's day. The match ended 6-3 6-2 and left 19 year old Robson with a lot to think about as 22 year old Wozniacki moves on to the next round full of confidence. Laura Robson will move her focus on to Wimbledon next, bar coach, as she and Zeljko Krajan parted ways in early May.
On Sunday Serena Williams sailed through her first round encounter with Anna Tatishvili, 6-0 6-1, extending her unbeaten streak to 25 games. By only dropping one game in two sets, one must predict that this French Open is Serena's to lose. Although, Tennis has been host to many upsets over the years.
