Serena Williams powers through to the third round at Wimbledon
Serena Williams powers on through to the third round of Wimbledon beating a future tennis star, Caroline Garcia, on Court no. 1 in a game filled with immense power on both sides of the net.
Serena Williams cruised her way through the first round, beating Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 6-3.
However, 19 year old Garcia showed real determination to win her first game in the second set as Serena Williams continuously pressured her and almost broke the young French woman's serve. Garcia began the second set with a powerful serve that had the potential of matching Williams' incredible strength. Williams having won two gold medals in the London Olympics and then the gone on to win the US and French open since here battle with a life threatening illness, looked in good form as she used her powerful forehand to smash winners against Garcia.
Despite being tested at the beginning of the second set Serena showed why she is one of, if not the, greatest tennis player of our generation. Her ability to move her body across the court and her pace off the mark made it difficult for the young French teenager to come anywhere near breaking the American.
The sixth game of the second set Williams' broke Garcia's serve with confidence that could only come from a player that has won 16 Grand Slams. The 5 time Wimbledon champion covered the net well making Garcia run around the court in disarray. Smashing serves that were recorded over 125mph and having broken her opponents serve twice in the second set, Williams seemed to be on her way to the third round and to a chance at improving on her now 33 match winning streak.
Garcia has a fantastic forehand but the talent of Serena Williams meant that the young player could not capitalise on her personal strength. Garcia, who is ranked 100th in the world showed enormous potential, skill and talent. She will undoubtedly go one to win many more matches and has even got the potential to become one of the best tennis players in the world once she starts to develop more as a player.
The ball toss was a real problem for Caroline Garcia. Numerous times she had to reset her serve after not being satisfies with the ball's presentation in the air. This could be a genuine aspect of the game where she needs to improve or it might simply be the pressure of playing against the best tennis player in the world in one of the biggest tennis stages in the world - Wimbledon Court no. 1.
Serena Williams closed out the second and last set with no hesitation and a calmness that comes with the confidence she has in her own game. The match finished 6-3, 6-2.
Talking after the match Serena Williams seemed just as excited and relieved to advance through to the next round as she would have been in her first Grand Slam competition - "I love these moments when I'm out here, I have so much fun". When speaking of her opponent Williams showed her admiration of the skill she possessed on the court today - "her serve is amazing, she has a lot of potential"
Next up for Williams is 42 year old Kimiko Date-Krumm who is the oldest tennis player in the WTA top 100. With 71% of the American's serves making it into the box today and with 9 aces to her name during the two set match on Court 1 this afternoon, it is going to be a hard battle for Date-Krumm to qualify for the fourth round of the Wimbledon championships. Williams is a player who can hit horrendously quick serves along with attacking the return with an almost complete accuracy. It is going to take a player with a big game to beat, or even come close, to beating Serena Williams is the form that she is in today - she might even be in the best form of her life.
