Formula 1: Hamilton Victorious in Hungary

Tonight tonight the highway's bright, out of our way mister you best keep `cause summer's here and the time is right, we're goin' racin' in the street - Racing in the Street (1978)

Having taken pole on two previous occasions throughout this season but having been unsuccessful in keeping his position in the front of the race until the checkered flag, Hamilton knew more than anyone that having that important position was never going to be enough to guarantee him a win in Hungary as the Mercedes rider stated that it would be a "miracle" if he won on Sunday. After moving from McLaren to Mercedes at the end of last season, Hamilton has been the 'almost' guy of the competition having been wasteful with his opportunities since his first race in Mercedes colours.

With temperatures soaring in the Hungarian summer and with pre-race tyre ware problems and engine overheating , Mercedes, Hamilton and the racing world were sceptical of the driver's odds of winning his first race this season. However, the former F1 World Champion drove a great race and with luck on his side (for the first time in a very long while) the British driver crossed the line to take his 22nd win of his career. Hamilton shot out of the blocks with a superb first lap and with Vettel appearing to have gotten stuck in the tarmac it looked as though everything was to play for. Hamilton's team mate, Nico Rosberg however did not get a great star having run wide twice before his bad luck reached tipping point and the German had to retire before the end of the race with his car being left under the heat of flames.

Having lost the lead to Webber and Grosjean after his first pit-stop, Hamilton quickly found his way back to the front as Red Bull's Mark Webber, having started on soft tyres, had to make a pit-stop on lap 23. This lead remained unchallenged for the rest of the race with Hamilton only having to face a few overtaking challenges but the driver was always in control. Hungary has always been a favourite of Hamilton's as the British driver has now won four out of seven races in the country.

Having been hit by the unfortunate Nico Rosberg on the first lap, Felipe Massa finished in eighth position, behind Button, after completing all 70 laps with a damaged front wing.

After the race the 28 year old winner expressed his shock of crossing the line first with all of 10 seconds to spare - "We really had no idea we could do that well. The last 20 laps was just managing my tyres and cruising. I think you can say I was hungry for it today."

Vettel finished in third place behind Lotus' Raikkonen but the German driver stays on top of the overall standings, 38 points ahead of the Finnish driver. Hamilton lies in fourth, one place ahead of Australian Mark Webber and Jenson Button in 9th place is only three points ahead of fellow Brit and Force India's Paul Di Resta.

Belgium will be the next stop on the Formula 1 calendar on the 23-25th of August - time for the drivers to rest and prepare for what will be another tough race with all to play for in the Drivers Championship.
