The IPC World Athletics Championships in Lyon have been filled with success for Team GB following on from their record breaking medal tally in London 2012.
Day one of the competition saw Paralympic champion, Hannah Cockcroft, add T34 200m sprint World Champion to her CV as she crossed the line in a Championship record breaking time of 31.78 seconds - just under two seconds ahead of the field. Only two days later the British athlete completed the sprint double by finishing the 100m in 17.88 and once more the woman from Yorkshire finished way ahead of the field with her nearest rival, Amy Siemons of the Netherlands clocking 19.15sec. A superb championships for the 20 year old.
Welshman Aled Davies also contributed to the Team GB medal haul as the 22 year old set a new world record to win the F42 shot put competition with a best throw of 14.71.The Paralympic medallist added to his Lyon 2013 success on Tuesday by winning a Gold Medal in the discuss with a spectacular throw of 47.62m.
"To come away as a double world champion is a good week's work. It was a tough competition and I wanted to start with a big throw because I knew I was in good shape but I won in the end and that is all that matters." Stated Davies after a great competition.
Paralympic favourite, Jonnie Peacock, suffered a bit of a shock during the T44 100m semi-finals as American, Richard Browne, had a storming run and broke the world record by producing a spectacular time of 10.38. However, the 2012 Paralympic champion held his nerve and when the final came around he was ready to battle it out on the track in one of the biggest rivalries in Paralympic sport. The Team GB athlete beat the American with a time of 10.99 to become ICP World Champion.
On Wednesday Sophie Hahn, who picked up a silver medal in the T38 200m earlier in the week, broke the 100m world record to claim the World Championship gold medal. The 16 year old from Nottingham ran 0.09 seconds faster than the previous record to secure an awesome time of 13.10. The gold medallist later told BBC Sport "I can't believe it. It's amazing."
There has been other success for Britain in these World Championships with Kyron Duke taking a silver in the javelin and a bronze in the F41 class shot put and more sprinting success came from Bethany Woodward who claimed the 200m silver medal in the T37 race.
It has been a great World Championships for Team GB and more importantly for the world of Paralympic sport and there is still another three days of competing to go. It is very evident that after the success of the London 2012 Paralympic games there has been an enormous increase in interest surrounding the sport and long may it continue to rise because these are not just great Paralympic athletes, these are simply great athletes.
