No. 1 seed, Serena Williams, is thrown out of Wimbledon after losing in the fourth round.
Serena Williams joins Sharapova, Nadal and Federer as she leaves Wimbledon in the fourth round having been beaten by German, Sabine Lisicki, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
There seems to be no end to the surprises in Wimbledon. First Nadal then Federer, Tsonga and now Serena Williams. Williams was noted as the favourite to win Wimbledon for a record time after successfully winning 33 games in a row, winning the French open and after cruising through the first few rounds at the All England tennis club. Today the American faced Sabine Lisicki, a woman who has beaten her three years in a row at Wimbledon and for times in the last five years. Today's match was not going to be an easy one for Williams.
Lisicki started strongly, winning the first set 6-1 much to the surprise of the crowd. This form quickly left the 23rd seed as she suffered 9 game losses in a row to lose the second set 1-6. Was the number one seed going to close this game out with another whitewash in the third round? Serena Williams looked as if she was about to close the game out with two breaks up in the third set but Lisicki made a monumental comeback by breaking twice and finally once again to close the set and the game out with a 6-4 win (6-2, 1-6, 6-4).
The German will now move on to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, although Lisiki could not quite believe it - "I'm still shaking, I'm so happy. It's such an amazing feeling to win this match". Williams gave credit to her opposition - "Sabine played really well, she always does at Wimbledon, so I knew it would be a tough match going in".
Serena Williams stated in the post match press conference that she now needs to work on "huge improvements" in her game after she stated that she "didn't play the points good enough" and had some hesitation in her game. Having only lost 11 games in her last three matches Serena Williams is still one of the best, if not the best, tennis player of our time - today however, Lisicki was just that much more determined.
