Team Sky rider, Geraint Thomas, battles on despite a fractured pelvis

It is safe to say that Geraint Thomas did not have the best start to his 2013 Tour de France. The Welshman suffered a fractured pelvis after being involved in a collision during the first stage of the iconic race. Despite the fact that the double Olympic Gold Medallist needed to be lifted on to his bike yesterday morning, he has vowed to continue until he can physically can not.

Thomas does this despite concern from family - "My mum doesn't want me to, but it's the Tour, it's not your average race, and I'm definitely going to keep fighting." Having raced four category climbs and manipulated his way around some very twisted roads the team Sky rider is determined to continue to challenge himself and his opposition during the full 21 stages of the race.

Today's time trial might show how much Thomas is suffering. With a 25km race around the south of France his fitness will be put to the test. Even if his body isn't in the best form it could be, his mind definitely is and his determination is unmatchable - "I have not come here just to do a lap of France," said Thomas at the finish. "It felt a lot better today than yesterday and it felt a lot better at the end than it did at the start."

Geraint Thomas' bravery has not gone unnoticed by Team Sky's general manager, Sir Dave Brailsford - "The determination and level of suffering required to ride on a course like this, with its twists and turns where you can never get into any kind of rhythm, was really considerable," he said. "He suffered an awful, awful lot – he deserves every bit of recognition and support for his suffering."

We will have to wait in till later today to see if the time trial will be one step too far for the injured yet completely determined Thomas.
